How to Roll a Joint

How to Roll a Joint

When it comes to cannabis consumption methods, nothing beats the standard joint.

Whether rolled straight or cone-shaped, doobs are a popular consumption method for novices and connoisseurs alike. They’re portable, shareable, and easily mistakable for a cigarette – well, except for the smell of course.

In this How to Roll a Joint guide, we’ll provide step-by-step instructions for rolling the perfect cone (or straight/cylinder-shaped joint, if that’s your thing).

How to Roll a Cone Joint

Some cannabis consumers swear by the cone, claiming that it burns more evenly and pulls better than a straight/cigarette-shaped joint. We’ll let you be the judge of that.

Step 1: Grind Cannabis

Use your favorite grinder, pair of scissors or coffee grinder to grind your cannabis into a fine consistency (but not too fine, as this may result in a tightly rolled joint with no airflow).

Step 2: Make a Filter (aka Crutch)

Some rolling papers come with built-in filter tips. If yours don’t, cut a narrow strip from a business card or thick paper/cardstock. Roll into a spiral shape, making sure that the thickness of the filter will match the narrow end of your joint.

Step 3: Fold the Paper Diagonally

When learning how to roll a cone joint, it’s very important to get this step right.

Rolling papers come pre-folded, typically straight down the middle. This is great for rolling a straight joint, but isn’t ideal for cones. So, we’re going to re-fold it.

Adjust the paper so that one end nearly touches the tip of the other side, while the other end only covers the area where the filter will go. Now, fold along this line.

Step 4: Add Cannabis

Place your filter at the narrow end and toss about 0.5g of finely ground cannabis into the newly folded paper, making sure to distribute the weed in a cone shape (less near the filter, more near the end you will light). With the sticky strip facing you, roll back and forth with your fingers until the weed starts to stick together and forms a cone shape.

Step 5: Roll It Up

Beginning at the filter end, tuck the paper so that it wraps tightly around the filter; continue tucking as you make your way to the other end.

Next, lick the sealing strip and proceed to seal the joint, starting from the end you will light. Keep rolling the joint until it has been fully sealed, then twist the open end closed.

Step 6: Light it Up!

How to Roll a Straight Joint

The straight joint (aka cylinder or cigarette-shaped joint) is preferred by some consumers for its perfectly even shape and stealth appearance. Let's take a closer look at how to roll a classic straight joint.

If yours don’t, cut a narrow strip from a business card or other thick paper. Roll into a spiral shape and adjust the size as needed, depending on how thick you want your joint to be.

Step 3: Keep the Paper Folded Along the Crease

No extra folding necessary.

Step 4: Add Cannabis

This is an essential step to master if you want to learn how to roll a straight joint.

Holding the paper by the fold, insert the filter tip in one end. Then, add about 0.5g of finely ground cannabis and distribute it evenly throughout the paper. Making sure the cannabis is evenly distributed and matches the thickness of the filter will help you roll the perfect joint.

Step 5: Roll It Up!

With the sticky strip facing you, roll the weed back and forth with your fingers until it starts to stick together and forms a solid cylindrical shape.

Now for the tricky part. Carefully roll the joint such that the end without the sticky strip begins to tuck into the weed-filled cylinder. Use your index fingers to keep it tucked as you continue rolling, until only the sealing strip is visible. Lick it and stick it, then twist the open end to close it.

Step 6: Light it Up!
